Ski trip!

New life!
A friend of mine gave birth to her first child this weekend. Normally this would be a beautiful experience for man and a woman - enjoying the moment that they see the face of their newborn child for the very first time, the first cries of their little bundle of joy, basking in the glow that new parents have the first time they hold their baby. That's not what happened in my friend's situation. There was no dad by her side, instead she asked me, her lifelong friend to be by her side. I have never witnessed a child being born before so to say I was nervous was an understatement. Watching my friend writhe in pain, spewing out obscenities like a drunken sailor and leaving claw marks on my arm did nothing to ease my nerves. I watched her face contort in pain as she pushed and pushed in a valiant attempt to bring her baby into the world. I watched as she cried when the doctor announced that the baby wasn't coming out in the natural way. I also watched through my own tears as my friend finally held her new baby as tears streamed down her face and it was apparent that the ordeal of her labor was ancient history.
Time in the country...
You know that story of the country mouse and the city mouse? Well, I am without a doubt, a city mouse. I love the sounds, the smells (good and bad) and the sights of city life. When my country mouse friends asked me to house sit while they went out of town, what immediately came to mind was the chicken coop they recently built in the backyard. Would I have to feed the chickens or even worse, clean the coop?? And yes I love the noises of the city, but do I really want to wake up to their rooster "cock-a-doodle doing" at the crack of dawn. Well, I owed them a favor so I said yes. And you know what? I loved their chickens - they have names and unique personalities and I didn't once think of making chicken cordon-blue, fried chicken or chicken parmiagiana the whole time I spent with them. And that whole thing about roosters waking up at the crack of dawn, they must have one lazy rooster because I woke before him every morning! Breathing in that country air for a week was really nice too. I'm still a city mouse but I think there is a tiny little bit of country mouse in me too.
Doing the right thing.
I did a good deed this weekend. My mother has been suggesting that I do some sort of volunteer work for a very long time. As long as I can remember she has been actively volunteering for one organization or another. And as long as I can remember she has been pushing everyone in the family to do some sort of volunteer work. She says it's food for the soul and I agree. Finding the time to fit in this food for the soul has always been my problem. Between work which always keeps me busy and play which I choose to let keep me busy, finding time for my good deed has been hard. This weekend I decided to make the time. I went to the nursing home where my grandmother lived for a time before she passed away and asked if I could volunteer. Turns out there was loads of things for me to do to help out. I helped with laundry, delivered books and snacks and best of all, played a few card games with the residents. When time was up, I left the home with a smile on my face. It did indeed feel like food for the soul.
