News & Announcements: Addressing the Over-Aggressive Word Filter

Wow, busy week! Another improvement related to the 2011 year-end survey is an effort to reduce the number of filtered words and tone down the over-aggressive nature of the word filter.

First, a little background. We do not like censorship but over the years there have been two main drivers to add words to the filter: rules from banks and an effort to block customers trying to spam the system.

Unfortunately, no system is perfect. Even with our logic improvements over the years certain words would trigger the filter even though contextually they were not bad whatsoever.

Yesterday we made a pass through the filtered words database and removed over 60% of the filtered words. We're going to revisit the newly reduced list and see if we can make further improvements. Feel free to post any specific cases you notice where you think the filter is being too aggressive and we'll do our best to address the issue.

Sincerely,

Brad

I laugh that the first word of my name is a filtered word.

Yeah, Brad, not only "ugly," but also "yo_ung" in e-mails. I don't quite understand that one.

Also, I started out as wkyken, because I'm Ken and used to live in western Kentucky (w ky), but whenever someone typed my name, it came out W***n. What am I missing about "kyke"? Thanks.

It's a slur word, but we removed that too.

...Why can I no longer use the word y-oung when describing someone as a y-oung man. It seems silly, because I can use the word boy!!

Made a few more adjustments. The word "young" can be used, but obviously the context must not imply anything inappropriate. There are certain qualifiers that are not allowed still.

Some models have Young or Te - en in thier names .
It could not be used as thier name in Forum or to write in email .

Testing with 2 sentences which were surprisingly censored before:

This is a relatively minor problem.

Don't want to feel I'm fl0gging a dead horse here.

First one is now OK. :thumbsup

Second one not allowed (without the usual "0" for "o" change) :(

I agree with Phil and LickaU's comments - rather more important to the topic.
